I received a BA in Sociology from Nagoya University , an MA in Socio-Informatics, and Ph.D. in interdisciplinary information studies from the University of Tokyo. I have worked as an announcer for Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting and have previously taught at Aichi Shukutoku University.
My research is mainly based on media studies and sociology. I’m currently focusing on the themes of media and social inclusion. My primary research area is community media, which I investigate from the perspective of social inclusion and people’s media literacy. My research focuses on how various forms of media can help marginalized people in society. This is done by using participatory research, interviews and analyzing media representation. Digital Storytelling is also one of the tools for empowerment. I have been researching Digital Storytelling as a practice through which different people can share their experiences and thoughts. For the past several years, I have also been involved in the Media Conte Project, conducting dialogical, collaborative storytelling workshops with diverse groups of people.
My research also focuses on broadcasting, particularly on the Program Council of self-censorship. The Program Council was introduced in 1959, in response to the renewal of the Broadcasting Act. This system is regarded as imposed self-regulation. Although the council is above the third party BPO regulator, it receives less attention. The role of the Program Council arguably needs to be further discussed. Recently, as the level of autonomy in broadcasting has been getting more attention in Japan.
Anyone wishing to engage in this further is welcome to apply.
